A Bubble of my own

The power of email has meant that I have found some gold in my junk filled inbox. So here it is below, an interview with Style Bubble's very own, Susie Bubble by yours truly.

Where did you grow up and go to school and what was it like?
SB: I grew up in London (also partially in Hong Kong). I went to a girl's school in North London, very academic but also very liberal as well. My school was the type of place where people would start up New Socialist clubs. We were quite geeky really... wind band, obsessed with getting A's but then there was this whole sub-culture thing that probably tied in with the Brit pop era. So like most teens in the mid-90s we were obsessed with Nirvana, all Brit pop bands and wanted to be Justine Frischmann. I wasn't the cleverest of the bunch but I did turn to fashion as a creative outlet because I wasn't the best at Art or the best at English essays. I was a mediocrity who escaped into clothes instead.

What inspired you to start blogging?
SB: I was just bored. There wasn't an inspiration moment. At the time, there weren't as many fashion blogs as there are now - I only read Style Bytes (now defunct), Fashionologie and Diane Pernet's blog. But I was contributing to this forum The Fashion Spot a lot so I decided to use the blog as more of a selfish outlet for my thoughts on fashion. It was definitely driven by wanting a sideline hobby.

How has blogging helped your career?
SB: It was never meant to 'help' my career. I was working in digital advertising when I started and to be honest, I never imagined working in anything else. That said, the blog did swing my career entirely... I ended up working for Dazed & Confused as editor of DazedDigital.com for two years which was a career move I never thought would happen. Now I'm freelancing permanently and working on individual projects.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
SB: Cooking, watching films (mostly at the Curzon, BFI and ICA where I abused my memberships), gigs (it was great for free tickets working at Dazed!), exhibitions... anything really... oh and shopping of course though I like to integrate it with blogging and not just shop for the sake of shopping.

What are your plans for the future?
SB: Hopefully just to carry on and continue the blog - it's been a struggle keeping it up alongside a full time job but now hopefully I have more freedom to do what I want with the blog.

What is the best thing about blogging?
SB: The responses from people and the people I write about. I love it when I write about a designer and something in turn happens to them like their pieces get called in by a magazine or they get a new buyer.

Who would you love to meet and why?
SB: I'd love to meet Hadley Freeman.... we have seen each other at shows but I've never plucked up the courage to go up to her and say how MUCH I admire her writing and her work.

April, 2010.

I wonder if she did ever get to meet her?
